From The Don's perspective, life has always been easy. He's grown up in a safe country, he's always had a family that could protect him, he's always had plenty of food to live like a king.
This makes it even more important to realize that for many other people, life is not like this.
The Don could also have been born along a riverbank in Tirana, part of a community that has been discriminated against for ages and around Europe.
Then, he would have had a significant chance of dying of tuberculosis at a young age. If he had any younger brothers or sister, he would have to take care of them and with that forfeit his slim chances of a good future, because he couldn't go to school.
His house would be filled with garbage, since that is the primary source of income for families like this. His bed, a simple mattress, would be in the same room as his father and mother's, and during winter, he would never get warm. And, the thing that might be the worst, when he would grow up, he would be called lazy by others for having given up on the useless struggle to improve his life on his own.
I was planning on incorporating my RL trip to Albania in a funny PR, but once I got started, I simply couldn't do it. Luckily, there are so many good people in Albania that want to help the families I described. This gives me hope that one day, the children I saw, will have a future worth fighting for.
Take the following story, as what I hope might happen to one of them:
Being born in Tirana in late 90s, Santo had learnt that life was harsh and unfair. He came from a poor and excluded family in the neighborhood of Bathorë, which was had grown into slum after people from all over Albania had flocked towards Tirana in a desperate attempt to catch up with capitalism.
But there was hope for Santo, because he found refuge in a local care center. Here, he could get more than just education, but also health care, meals, and a safe place to play with his friends. They played football every day, but Santo soon discovered that he liked something else better.
Santo fell in love with cycling, despite the stray dogs attacking him whenever he was practicing. This only made him go faster.
One day, his parents decided that if he was going to have a future, he would have to move to Italy. Santo was only 15 years old, but thanks to his education, he managed to find a job and even got an Italian passport. His passion was still to cycle though, and at 19 years old, he finally got the chance of his life. Santo Loda is a professional cyclist for Schiavi di Don.
